a letter from the founder
aka, we got mushy 💌
When I was little, my parents introduced me to two important tales: one of Hercules and his twelve labors, and the other of Jesus the Good Shepherd. Then, at age nine, I met childhood friends who, seeing my stacks of novels, believed I would start my own publishing house when we grew up.
There is something magical about books. As works of the imagination or knowledge, as pieces of art, or as objects of symbolic, cultural, or intellectual capital (to paraphrase Pierre Bourdieu).
They — and stories — are with us from childhood. But in today’s attention economy and AI world where I argue it is increasingly difficult and expensive to put a new voice, perspective, or idea out for notice, for good, or for change: I wanted a new way of birthing a book.
A new way of experiencing human writing.
So I decided to build characterᴴ, a place for everybody and anybody to go to for publishing their book — to see it narrated, shared, and heard by many. I started as a small studio in Sydney, dreaming of a better future for making books from start to finish, and that I could build it.
…A home for writers, publishers, reviewers, and artists to see and hear their words being born. You can digitise your book, hear it narrated, and see it thoughtfully reach readers across retailers, streaming services, and social platforms.
I believe characterᴴ is that future.
Warmly,
Anastasia S. Kim
